Hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games could deliver a R20 billion boost to South Africa’s economy, Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said on Thursday.

Briefing journalists at Parliament following Cabinet’s fortnightly meeting on Wednesday, he noted that Durban had earlier this week formally lodged, in London, its bid to be host city.

“Hosting of these games can potentially create approximately 11,650 jobs and boost the country’s economy by an estimated R20bn.

“Another legacy of the games will be an integrated transport system for Durban for which the plans have already been approved,” he said. SapaLogo
