Council mops up Mother City after Cape storm wreaks havoc

By Tammy Petersen

Cape Town – The City of Cape Town will on Saturday continue remedial operations following the havoc wreaked by a storm which hit the Mother City as a well-developed cold front makes its way across the country.

Disaster risk management spokesperson Charlotte Powell told News24 that while the heavy rain caused damage in parts of the city, it wasn’t as severe as emergency services had anticipated.

A total of 150 homes in Khayelitsha and Marcus Garvey, Philippi were flooded, trees were uprooted in Constantia, Belhar, Delft, Kloofnek, Fish Hoek, Wynberg and Glencairn and power lines were down in Retreat on Friday night.

Powell said departments responded on Friday night and would continue to deal with the results of the storm on Saturday.

Roads were also submerged in the downpour, and council officials are unblocking drains and clearing the roadways.

Flooded roads also caused damage to property in Kensington and Wetton.

Roofs also blew off homes in Schaapkraal, Philippi, Lavender Hill, Imizamo Yethu and Masiphumelele.

Rescue services also responded to eight vehicle crashes. No one sustained serious injuries. – News24
