Vd Burgh wins silver, SA’s first Rio Olympic medal; Chad in freestyle final

Cape Town – Cameron van der Burgh has won South Africa’s first medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Van der Burgh took the silver medal in the men’s 100m breaststroke on Sunday night (Monday morning SA time) in a time of 58.69.

Great Britain’s Adam Peaty took the gold medal in stunning fashion, setting another world record in 57.13.

Chad le Clos makes Tuesday’s 200m freestyle final

Cape Town – South Africa’s Chad le Clos has qualified for the final of the men’s 200m freestyle final at the Rio Olympics.

Le Clos, swimming in the second semi-final, posted the seventh-fastest time to sneak into the final.

Le Clos’ time of 1:45:94 was good enough for fifth-best in his semi-final, which was won by China’s Sun Yang in the fastest overall time (1:44:63).

Le Clos’ South African team-mate Myles Brown finished sixth in his semi-final (1:46:57) and failed to qualify for the final.
