The machine behind the WEF’s incredible content generating website

Alec Hogg spoke to Michael Hanley, Editorial Director at the World Economic Forum about the technologies, content and communications that are being driven on the WEF’s site, weforum.org. Hanley explains the complex operations that are producing incredible amounts of content that are laden with profound insights from the WEF’s contributors, delegates and thought leaders, in total adding interactive credibility and information for users to digest the most pressing topics on the WEF’s agenda. – LF

ALEC HOGG:  Michael Hanley is with the World Economic Forum.  You guys have been picking up on your technology/social media side.  You actually have a lovely presentation here.

MICHAEL HANLEY:  Thank you very much.  This is the World Economic Forum’s Agenda publishing platform.  We publish 60 pieces of content daily – many of them from our community here at the World Economic Forum, talking about some of the big, global issues that we’re concerned with here at the Forum.

ALEC HOGG:  Take us through it.  What type of information do you have here?

MICHAEL HANLEY:  Sure.  One of our mission statements at the World Economic Forum is that we shape global, regional, and industry agendas.  On the agenda, we have global issues and these are the ten global issues that the Forum is committed to working on.  These are our regional areas and these are the industries we work in, and so we publish content in all of those.  Here’s an article for instance, from Klaus Schwab about how the world needs a new kind of international…

ALEC HOGG:  I just love your screen, though.

MICHAEL HANLEY:  It’s fantastic, isn’t it?  I love this screen, too.  This is our live traffic.  Right now, on the site, we have 338 active viewings, as you can see.

ALEC HOGG:  Nobody from Africa.

MICHAEL HANLEY:  There’s nobody from Africa.  Come on, Africa.  Tune in.  Where are your people?  We have plenty of stuff on Africa on the site, so it’s totally worth having a look.

ALEC HOGG:  And it’s agenda.wefforum.org.

MICHAEL HANLEY:  Yes, it’s agenda.weforum.org.  You can Google World Economic Forum and if you go to our home page…  This is today’s proceedings, as you can see.  That was yesterday’s special address from Francois Alain.

ALEC HOGG:  And if you press it, you can see what he had to say.

MICHAEL HANLEY:  Yes.  We go back there and there he is – live.  Well not live, but he is archived.  There are 125 sessions from this week’s annual meeting archived on the website and you can see them all right here.

ALEC HOGG:  To me, the best session was the Crystal Awards, undoubtedly.  You don’t get to see Bocelli in concert.

MICHAEL HANLEY:  Yes, it was very emotional.  Wasn’t it beautiful?

ALEC HOGG:  A lovely facility as you say, and people from all over the world…anyone who has access to the Internet, can get on.

MICHAEL HANLEY:  Absolutely.  We’d love to have you.

ALEC HOGG:  Michael Hanley is with the World Economic Forum.
