73 people were nominated to fill Thuli Madonsela’s shoes, not an easy task at all, when she steps down in October 2016. Madonsela carried the flag high, going as far as being chosen by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people. She’s battled hard against a scourge of corruption and elements of State Capture that’s littered South Africa. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, as is seen by the nomination declinations of Gerrie Nel and former finance minister Nhlanhla Nene. The biggest concern must be that the President selects the Public Protector, a tough ask given the 783 corruption charges he has to face. Let’s hope it’s not another Gupta-inspired decision and that the legacy Thuli Madonsela has created will live on. The ful list of nominations is below. – Stuart Lowman
