Took a welcome break from the complexities of Ponzi schemes and financial infighting last night. My father-in-law who is 89 and still serves the organisation as chair of its historical society, was honoured at the AGM of the SA Institute of Electrical Engineers. We went along to witness his installation as the Honorary Vice President. As it was held at Eskom’s Megawatt Park headquarters, the event also provided a welcome escape from the latest round of load-shedding.

It was a delightful evening, especially the presentation by incoming President Andre Hoffmann. He reminded us the plot of the second in the Michael J Fox science fiction movies Back to the Future was set in 2015. It was fun to see what the script writers got right – not so much to realise that it was shot in 1989 which for some of us seemed like just the other day.

Hoffmann also provided a reminder of the Greek proverb that a society becomes great when old men plant trees knowing they will never sit in their shade. Wonder how many trees South Africa’s 70-somethings are planting? Come on JZ, there’s an example worth setting.
