Alec Hogg: Farewell Peter Lotis who reminded us character is revealed in storms

By Alec Hogg

The angels came this week for singer, broadcaster and all-round great guy Peter Lotis. His passing closed my chapter on a little station called Radio Today which at one point was a big part of my life.

Ten years ago, I was asked by Peter and colleague the late Dr Ivan May to support the station. They’d seen us turn Classic FM from hopelessly bankrupt into a cash cow. Agreeing to help, though, sparked months of unintended conflict.

It’s amazing how much nastiness surfaces when vested interests are threatened. The mere suggestion we would assist this tiny community station saw commercial incumbents hire the best legal brains in the country and support a splinter group of listeners who caused unimaginable chaos.

Through it all, Peter Lotis and Ivan May stood staunchly beside us. Both these wonderful men were weighed and not found wanting. Leaving a permanent reminder that character is revealed during the storms, not sunshine.  Rest in Peace.

As we all (should) realise, the course of our life is largely the consequence of the choices we make. Here Peter had some good advice for choosing your daily approach to life:

“Walking in the sunshine, sing a little sunshine song”

Have a blessed day

Your note on Peter Lotis is inspiring. Moreso because it is a true story.

Nothing beats the truth, not even fiction.

Thank you, Peter was a giant.
