Growth at what cost; is a tier system the answer?

By Stuart Lowman

The writing was on the wall with declining attendances and TV viewing last year. And with the second week of fixtures underway, it seems to be more of the same.

I’m referring to the Super Rugby competition, which in years gone by enticed me to Superbru and first weekend braai’s, but this year neither.

The competition has grown from a Super 6 in 1992, to an 18 team event introduced in 2016, with plans to go even bigger beyond 2020 – and one wonders where the ceiling is?

In life there is always a right way to grow and a wrong way to grow, and while one doesn’t want to stop spreading the game of rugby, it seems this method might need a rethink.
