Alec Hogg: Immortality assured – Just tell me where I’m going to die…

By Alec Hogg

If you have ever considered joining Warren Buffett’s thousands of groupies at Berkshire Hathaway’s annual “Woodstock for Capitalists”, this is the year. The Omaha AGM usually attracts 30 000. It is the Golden Anniversary of Buffett taking control of the company, so the 2015 number is certain to hit a new record.

When attending my first AGM ten years back, FirstRand chairman Laurie Dippenaar encouraged me to make haste and get a taste of this Americana before it ended.

As it turned out, there was no hurry. Today, Buffett is 84 and business partner Charlie Munger, a sprightly 91. The latter has a fail-safe solution to ensuring his continued presence: “Tell me where I’m going to die, so I’ll never go there.”

Long may he (and Buffett) stay clear of that place.
