More surprises to come in this year of the underdog

Interesting to see how well informed Biznews community members are. My quip about The World Series in yesterday’s newsletter sparked emails reminding the baseball championship was named after a long gone newspaper – not because Americans believe it is contested between the best baseballers on earth.

Whatever your call on naming rights, there can be little doubting the insularity of most Americans. Last time I looked, less than one in 10 from the Land of the Free own a passport. For most there’s little need to travel over oceans when one possesses a world of many self-standing states in your own land.

Which brings us to the real point. For the rest of humanity, a President Donald Trump would be a step backwards. So we not-so-neutral outsiders are willing Hillary home. But for many Americans, Trump is a vote against an establishment they have grown to despise. A bit like the radical right who tipped the Brexit scales. Or those who will vote against the ANC in August. There are almost certainly more surprises to come in this year of the underdog.

And the Iceland beat England.

What a Trifecta that might have been?

Leicester City, Iceland, and Trump.

For the Grand One.

Yes it is the year of surprises. Iceland, with a population the size of Leicester attests to that, their football team downing the not so mighty Bulldogs last evening.
