Third time lucky – yesterday’s life lessons for a dreamer

By Alec Hogg

Celebrated a highlight yesterday at the London Stadium watching the team I’ve supported for half a century in the flesh. It was right up there with Bafana v France in 1998 WC; and Bafana v Uruguay in 2010 WC.

My takeaways? First, one can learn much about a nation by the way it embraces its disabled. West Ham, like most other English football clubs, goes the extra mile for disadvantaged folks. Big up.

Second, all good things really do come to those with patience. For a soccer mad kid, growing up in a small KZN town was about as far from the Olympic Stadium as you could imagine. Yet the dream did come true.

And occasionally the event lives up to the billing. Bafana didn’t (twice) but the Hammers certainly did. There really is something to this third time lucky thing.
