Witnessing what science cannot explain – but spirituality can

By Alec Hogg

In this age of big data, social networks and instant communication, disruption is everywhere. Especially in science, where fresh battles are erupting in a 300 year old war between secular and spiritual approaches.

Over the weekend I got to see the latest thinking at a conference in London. It was my first live exposure to mind-reading, spoon-bending Uri Geller, an enigma whose unique talents launched a global study in Extra Sensory Perception. Also in the lineup were world leading new age thinkers and reputable scientists whose empirical proof is rocking long-held paradigms.

Among my favourites was humble Singaporean Anita Moorjani, who shared her near death experience complete with medical records which prove she shouldn’t have come back from the other side. It reminded us the essence of Albert Einstein’s famous e=mc2 formula was to prove energy is never lost – so where does it go when one dies?

The stories reminded me of what GG Alcock witnessed and relates in his book Third World Child. GG writes about a chilling ceremony to relocate the restless spirits of men who died more than a century earlier at the battle of Isandlwana. Traditional science cannot explain Geller, Moorjani or those long dead Zulu warriors. Spirituality together with an open mind certainly can.
