Do unto others……

Glynnis Carthy

My dream for South Africa in 2017 is that South Africans of all races take a leap of faith and work together to make South Africa a better place for all.

I dream of South Africa being a non-racial society.

I dream of each of us remembering this acronym that I have found before we speak and say racist things:

T – is what I am about to say True?

H – is what I am about to say Helpful?

– is what I am about to say Inspiring?

– is what I am about to say Necessary?

– is what I am about to say Kind?

I dream of us stopping to consider our actions before we roll our eyes in frustration or say that “we” are better than “they” are.

I dream of us considering whether we would like someone to treat us, or speak about us, in the same way in which we are about to behave.

I dream of each South Africa doing his bit to keep South Africa clean.

I dream of each of us remembering the Gees we felt during the 2010 World Cup, how proud we were to be South African then and how many sports, including rugby and soccer have the ability to unite us.  We can unite our nation in 2017 – we don’t need to wait for a major sporting event to do so.

Let’s embrace the things that unite, rather than divide, us.
