Two to be extradited from Britain to face fraud charges

Two South Africans will be extradited from Britain to face prosecution for alleged fraud amounting to R10 million, the Hawks said on Thursday.

“Mr Gregory Hamilton and Mr Peter Carl Vernon, will be handed to the Hawks on Friday to face their charges separately,” said Captain Paul Ramaloko.

“A team of Interpol officials will arrive with the suspects at OR Tambo International Airport,” he said.

The two allegedly fled South Africa after fraud allegations were levelled against them, Ramaloko said.

Hamilton, 45, is accused of defrauding Refrigeration Investment Company and Refrigeration Company in 2007, he said.

“Hamilton allegedly misappropriated nearly R6m of share transactions by transferring it to banks of three different parties, from which he accessed the funds for his personal gain,” Ramaloko said.

Vernon, 50, allegedly transferred nearly R5m from his previous employer Gold Reef City’s account to his personal account in 2010, he said.

He was employed as chief financial officer at the time.

Ramaloko said they would appear in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court when they arrived in South Africa on Friday.
