There are 257 municipalities in South Africa. However, just 38 (15%) received a clean, unqualified audit for the past calendar year. More than half of these outliers (21) are in the Western Cape province, with 30 municipalities in total.
Had another harrowing discussion yesterday with super-activist Ian Cameron. In it, the community director of Action Society said SA’s police minister Bheki Cele must “live in a different country” after publicly proclaiming the trend in national crime stats has turned.
___STEADY_PAYWALL___On. Cameron’s analysis of the data released this week, the only one of SA’s nine provinces where this is true is the Western Cape – and that’s despite rather than because of Cele’s direction. You’ll find the audio and video of our interview on BizNews.com. Well worth consuming.
It’s not just local government and crime prevention where the most southerly province is a beacon of hope for a despondent nation. Perhaps it’s because the Democratic Alliance does have a better plan for the Beloved Country. Or maybe, as the province is this political party’s only working template, the DA does try harder- because it must.
That matters not. What does is that all South Africans can witness a real-life example of what is possible. And in a year, they get the opportunity to choose. Roll on 2024.
