Today’s newsletter relies heavily on two talented, well-travelled women, who help us understand the turbulence in the chaotic country where a super-wealthy elite rules over one of the world’s largest nuclear arsenals.
Irina Filatova is a treasured contact. The academic and author who left her native Moscow in the 1990s to take up a post in Durban is the most enlightened local source on all things Russian. She’s brave, too, always speaking truth to shadowy power. You’ll find yesterday’s interview by clicking here.
___STEADY_PAYWALL___And here is another superb contribution from our partners at the Financial Times, whose star columnist Gillian Tett shares her on-the-ground experiences of revolutions past – and how smartphones are the updated version of the historic televised war in Iraq, which made CNN the global standard for a while anyway.
Irina made an interesting point that you may miss among all the other gems. Considering the ANC, EFF and SACP’s well-documented sycophantic approach to all things Putin, isn’t it strange that none of them has commented publicly on the coup that wasn’t? Hopefully, rationality will prevail among those one-eyed dogmatics.
Sterkte.
Alec
P.S. Click here for the recording of the latest BizNews share portfolio webinar. Apologies for my blapse in Tuesday’s newsletter where I referred to “tomorrow’s” webinar. Rookie mistake – the note was written on Monday night, forgetting delivery was the next day.
