Today, we welcome our very own cartoonist, David Doubell. His first contribution, displayed above, encapsulates all the ingredients of a compelling current affairs cartoon – a picture that communicates more than a thousand words.
Ever since I met the late, great Bob Connolly at the Rand Daily Mail, I’ve been a huge admirer of the contributions cartoonists make to society. Probably because Bob, a vertically challenged American genius, seemed to enjoy entertaining my 20-year-old self by answering my questions about the back stories to his daily sketches.
___STEADY_PAYWALL___David has effectively captured the essence of Anthea Jeffery’s new book. His art reminds us how the “Comrades” not only perceive themselves to be in a different era but impose outdated and long-discarded economic blueprints that are no guide for a modern nation. Policies akin to the fizzing black-and-white TV set above.
We’ve already published some excellent reviews of Anthea’s book. Yesterday, Paul Hoffman of Accountability Now had his turn, stating that he was inspired by my interview with the author. You can read Paul’s piece on BizNews now.
Today, Dave Stewart, chairman of the FW de Klerk Foundation, weighs in with his equally forthright thoughts. It’s good to see the masterpiece receiving the richly deserved recognition.
