In light of our recent coverage on the Israel-Hamas conflict, we’ve received a multitude of suggestions, ranging from taking a specific stance to featuring various experts for interviews. While we appreciate the input, it’s important to note that the intricacies of the Middle East lie beyond BizNews’ core expertise. As a result, we’ll continue to rely on our global partners like Financial Times and Bloomberg, as well as local experts with world-class insights, such as Dr. Frans Cronje.
Speaking of Dr. Cronje, it raises the question of whether Pretoria will follow his advice and recant on its immediate and vocal support for Hamas. As the graphic above illustrates, during Saturday’s invasion Hamas also murdered two South African citizens, with another currently unaccounted for, possibly being held hostage. This poses a dilemma for Pretoria, given that a state’s primary responsibility is to safeguard the lives of its citizens.
___STEADY_PAYWALL___Also worth reflecting on are points made in the piece by Rabbi David Lapin. For context, in the mid-1990s, I was among the Absa Exco members who attended a workshop on Ethics led by Lapin. Insights from that session had a profound impact, the effects of which continue to resonate today.
David, who now lives in Israel and remains fully committed to his field, yesterday published his latest newsletter on LinkedIn, including feedback on the past week’s violence. His clear and concise perspectives on this complex issue are enlightening. Uplifting, too, for those of us trying to make sense of things in these complex times.
Sterkte.
