🔒 Boardroom Talk – Mini Budget 2024 today – a crucial marker in SA’s financial history.

By Alec Hogg

It’s Mini-Budget Day. Courtesy of our long-time sponsor BrightRock, I’ll be in Lockup at Parliament from 6am this morning. Just after 2pm today we’ll have all the news you need to know about this crucial point in the national financial history – visit BizNews.com. Then at 6pm tonight, it’s my interactive report-back on the MTBPS.

Pleased to see that I’m not the only one who misses Cees Bruggemans. My old friend, Lucien Vallun, who was one of the best in the communications business during my career’s formative years, sent a heartfelt and uplifting email after yesterday’s newsletter:

“Reading my regular copy of BizNews here in Healesville in the wine region of Victoria, I am ever appreciative of how it keeps me up to date on events back in the home country. As the years pass by, I am struck by particularly poignant bits of news and I often want to enter the conversation only to procrastinate and let the opportunity pass me by. However, on reading of the death of Cees Bruggemans all of six years ago, which I regret to say I missed completely, and his brief article you republished, I was motivated enough to overcome my customary procrastination.

We worked closely with Cees while FNB was a client of ours and it was for me a very pleasant and enriching working relationship. His softly spoken carefully measured views were always thought provoking and right on the money, and your republished article authored by him is a typical example of this.

I can only concur strongly with your closing comments. Your newsletter is a regular reminder of the depth of intellect and insight I was fortunate to encounter during my working days in South Africa. Long may it continue.”

My mood was similar during yesterday’s webinar, where I recapped the rationale for starting the BizNews Webtrader portfolio almost nine years ago. In that time, while the ANC’s mismanagement has caused South Africa’s economy to grow slower than its population, our R2.25 million invested abroad is now worth R9.5 million.

Perhaps we can credit the Springboks for demonstrating how resilient our nation is and how success is possible despite insurmountable odds. Who’s to say we’re not on the brink of significant political and, consequently, economic change?

Roll on 2024.

Sterkte

Alec
