From Medupi madness to mayhem: Workers reject offer

JOHANNESBURG, April 15 (Reuters) – Thousands of workers at South African Eskom’s Medupi power plant stayed away from work on Wednesday, rejecting an offer by the firm to rehire workers dismissed for vandalism during a strike over higher pay and better living conditions.

Labour disruption and technical faults have increased costs at Eskom’s Medupi coal-fired plant, which is under construction.

“They are not satisfied with Eskom’s offer to reinstate workers with full pay, they want all their demands addressed before they return to work,” Steve Nhlapo, head of collective bargaining at the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa told Reuters.
