Durban – Hundreds of Amabutho (regiments) clad in full traditional Zulu regalia have entered Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, where King Goodwill Zwelithini has called an imbizo.

More than 10 000 people including Amakhosi, Izinduna, and Amabutho are expected to listen to Zwelithini as he addresses matters relating to the recent xenophobic attacks in KwaZulu-Natal. Several municipal buses were seen outside the stadium dropping off people.

Amabutho were singing: “Elethu izwe, owani umbango [What’s the rivalry for]?”

When a News24 reporter asked one of the singers what the song meant he said “this is our nation why do we have to share it with other nations”.

The king is expected to address the masses at about midday.

Amabutho have taken a walk around the stadium singing and dancing as they wait for Zwelithini. An Imbongi (praise singer) was due to usher the king in singing praise songs.

News24 understands that over 300 Amakhosis have been locked in a private meeting with the King since earlier on Monday morning.
