Strike it while you’re hot – when is it the right time to go?

It was South African football’s worst kept secret. Eric Tinkler quit Cape Town City to fill the vacant post at SuperSport United after Stuart Baxter had left to coach Bafana Bafana.

Tinkler surprised the footballing fraternity last season, having previously failed with premiership giants Orlando Pirates, he managed to finish third with the lesser-fancied team from Cape Town.

The reaction on Twitter is mixed. While SuperSport may be the bigger team, they also finished below the Cape side last season.

It does raise the question: when is it the right time to go? Does one leave for ‘greener pastures’ while they’re in favour, or do they stick around and try create a dynasty?

Sounds a lot like an Alex Ferguson vs Jose Mourinho debate. It depends on which team you supported…
