Managing one’s workload is not limited to business, just ask tennis superstar Roger Federer, who following a six-month injury layoff, skipped the entire clay court season to focus on winning a record 8th Wimbledon title.
He went on to win the 2017 tournament without dropping a set, overtaking former greats Pete Sampras and William Renshaw in the process; because that’s what gifted sports people do.
So, when cricket sensation AB de Villiers retires from international cricket because he’s tired, I wonder why Cricket South Africa can’t apply a Federer-like approach. With the World Cup next year, to lose the experience and ability of de Villiers will hurt, no matter how one phrases it.
Surely CSA and AB can sit down and work out a schedule that allows him to be on that plane next year, because every Protea fan would like to see them win this ever-elusive trophy.
