Johannesburg – A selection of newsworthy or quirky quotes heard this week made it into headlines – and most of them from the mouths of our politicians.

– “When we come back next you will not be our president.” – Shout from an EFF MP as the party left the National Assembly chamber chanting “Zupta must fall” during President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Speech.

– “Our economy is also affected by domestic factors like electricity constraints and labour relations which are sometimes… unstable.” – Zuma during his speech.

– “Sit down Mr Zupta.” – EFF MP Godrich Gardee to Zuma during the SONA. The party has accused Zuma of being in cahoots with the Gupta family.

– “The honourable president has already admitted in the Constitutional Court that he broke his oath of office. He is no longer honourable.” – Cope leader Mosiuoa Lekota while interrupting Zuma’s speech.

– “It is the colour of victory.” – Public Protector Thuli Madonsela explaining why she chose a yellow dress to wear to the SONA.

– “We wish to inform the speaker of the Parliament not to organise security on that day. The youth league will physically remove wood workers from Parliament.” – ANCYL leader Collen Maine referring to the EFF’s threat to disrupt the SONA, and to Julius Malema’s getting a G for woodwork, on the standard grade, in matric.

– “Although Rabia and I were raised in different cultural and religious traditions, our coming together reflects what we have in common: We are South Africans.” – Nelson Mandela’s grandson Mandla Mandela, after he married Rabia Clarke, a Muslim, and converted to Islam.

– “People can’t believe that we have brought back the prices we used 20 years ago, but we are here for our public. My late dad told me to look after the man on the street.” – Akash Brijanund, owner of Durban’s Sunrise Chip n Ranch curry house, who reduced his prices to 1996 levels as part of a special running until March 15.

– “I’m thinking of starting a running club. I know there’s plenty of other roads, but I think if there is an opportunity to put us directly in harm’s way, then why not?” – A Facebook post by East Coast Radio DJ Kevin Minter-Brown, commenting on the two cyclists who were knocked down and killed by a car on the M4 in Durban. He was fired.

– “You can’t be a saint in public while at home you are a self-made boxer. You have turned your house into a boxing gym.” – Limpopo Magistrate Daniel Maluleke while sentencing preacher Boy “MilliBoy” Baloyi for beating up his girlfriend.

– “This could not be a more flagrant violation of his duty as president to protect the Constitution.” – The EFF’s lawyer Wim Trengove addressing the Constitutional Court on President Jacob Zuma’s refusal to repay the money spent on his Nkandla home.

– “He defied her order to protect his ill-gotten gains.” – Trengove on Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s Nkandla recommendations.

– “We say we accept that the president is required to carry out remedial action. The public protector’s report has to be complied with.” – President Jacob Zuma’s legal representative Jeremy Gauntlett.

– “It is a delicate time in a dangerous year.” – Gauntlett explaining his client’s about-turn on repaying the Nkandla money.

– “Even the Guptas must know that the day they are caught, Zuma will say ‘I don’t know them’.” – EFF leader Julius Malema responding to submissions in the Constitutional Court in which the president effectively blamed Parliament and Police Minister Nathi Nhleko for his failure to pay for Nkandla.

– “Come fix my toilet and I will vote for you.” – Elsies River, Cape Town, resident Mary-Anne Stevens during an ANC door-to-door visit.

– “We will use bicycles, donkey-carts, cars, lorries, trucks, buses, trains, planes, helicopters, ships, boats, and all forms of transport.” – EFF spokesperson Mbuyiseni Ndlozi on how the party intends to campaign for this year’s local government elections.

– “We cannot allow Julius Malema and his monkeys to run our country amok and turn this country into a banana republic.” – ANCYL leader Collen Maine addressing a rally in Soshanguve.

– “Any description of people as any animal, we don’t believe is correct.” – ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa responding to Maine’s referring to EFF members as monkeys. – News24
