Kevin Hedderwick says he’s loving living in Zimbali. That doesn’t surprise me. The man who took Famous Brands to dominance in SA’s fast foods sector will relate to the impeccably managed KZN resort whose attention to detail is apparent to anyone who visits – an attribute Hedderwick reckons shaped his own business career.

One learns a great deal when you get to question someone face-to-face for an hour. In Kevin’s case, it was impossible to edit that conversation back to the 30 minutes my new show targets, so it is the first of eight episode to over-run. But after tuning in, I am sure you’ll forgive the extra time.
During his visit to our Sandton studio, Hedderwick shared how as a young man he fancied spending his life in the military – drawn by the discipline it imposed. Although his time in the Police Force was relatively brief, a passion for discipline never dimmed and was later applied to great effect in a spectacular business career.

At the time he joined the Halamandres family’s chain of Steers stores, the JSE-listed business was worth R65m. By the time Hedderwick left a decade and a half later, the renamed Famous Brands group had a market cap of R16bn. If there’s a superior wealth creator in SA, I’ve yet to encounter them.
