During the decades that SA’s favourite stockbroker David Shapiro shared the studio on my nightly business radio shows, he often shared how it forced him to stay up to date. I’m finding the same thing helping out on the new BizNews Power Hour expertly anchored by our Jackie Cameron.

Earlier in the week I finally got to understand how Tax Free Savings accounts actually work, courtesy of Candice Paine’s inputs. And realised that NOT putting away the R36 000 SARS allows, has been one of the dumbest investment mistakes I’ve been making. This is now my top priority every new tax year.

Then last night, I found the perfect place to put this long-term tax free nest egg – Sygnia’s 4IR exchange traded fund. Founder Magda Wierzycka told us on the Power Hour she has a lot of her own money in the ETF. And is not at all concerned about recent volatility because the fund is highly diversified (over 350 stocks) and is positioned for a five year view. Also, its a great rand hedge.

The graph above proves Magda’s point. So far this year, the 4IR fund (black line) has outperformed now flat Nasdaq Composite (blue line) by around 20%. It’s been helped by the Rand shock-absorber. March’s tech stock selloff didn’t hurt the Sygnia fund which is positive for the month. Nice one Magda.
