Although they live in a country possessing two thirds the land mass of its southern neighbour, there is only Namibian for every 24 South Africans. The reason is obvious – Namibia’s 1600km coastline is windy and the water freezing cold – so outside of small pockets, it holds little appeal. Ditto the interior which is mostly inhabitable desert.
But those previous disadvantages have suddenly transformed into massive assets.
As the article below by our US partners at The Wall Street Journal explains, Namibia is ideally positioned to become a global leader in producing and exporting renewable energy. More specifically, green hydrogen. Wind and heat is exactly what the post-fossil fuel age ordered. Plus. Namibia is also relatively corruption-free. So the energy-hungry Rich North is paying attention.

This is great news for SA. A prosperous Namibia will support the whole region. It may even drag SA’s ideologically-defective politicians into the new world. And offset SA’s magnetic status for migrants. Mozambique’s world class gas fields and now Namibia’s green hydrogen potential provide alternatives for those seeking better lives to the south. Hope springs.

* The Intelligent Investor: What’s not to like about a fund with a 7% US Dollar yield? A booming US stock market isn’t what most conservative investors think of as a source of income. But that, and leverage, are the magic behind the juicy pay outs in a popular ETF.
