We South Africans are rather fond of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The megastar turned governor of California often refers to his mentor Reg Park, Johannesburg’s world champion body builder who hosted the Austrian when he was a gangly teenager and taught him the trade which put Schwarzenegger onto his path to fame and fortune.
Arnie had another even earlier boyhood hero, Russian weightlifter Yuri Petrovich Vaslov. In a 9 minute video that has now been watched by tens of millions recalls how, at 14, the Russian changed his life. Click above to watch the YouTube version, or here via Twitter.

There is no doubt that Schwarzenegger is a brilliant storyteller. Sharing his story to a difficult to reach and convince audience may be playing an important role in Moscow’s newfound quest for peace.
The video also provides a reminder of the power of effective communication when distributed through appropriate channels. But in this space, SA companies are way behind, wasting billions on outdated, expensive media channels. Society long ago moved on to the cheaper, more efficient information platforms of the Information Age. Many corporate mindsets haven’t.
