One of my mentors, former ABSA CEO Dr Danie Cronje, told me an overseas trip could be worth months of formal university study. Open eyes and ears to what’s around you, he said, and you’ll absorb perspectives easily missed when living in our geographically- and often intellectually-isolated corner of the world.
After my experiences of the past two weeks, Danie’s words ring truer than ever. Seeing buoyant business activity in the UK and Switzerland came as a jolt after SA’s all-too-apparent economic stagnation. Overlay a Covid-imposed absence of three years and exposure to extraordinary ideas and people during the WEF meeting in Davos, and the impact has been explosive.

I’ll share details at noon tomorrow during our monthly webinar updating the BizNews portfolios (click here or on image above for the most recent one). If your diary permits, please book to join this interactive, Premium-member-only event. If not, watch out in this newsletter tomorrow where I’ll post a link to the recording.

- The Tech Crash Could Be a Talent Bonanza for Big Tech. After years of fighting to keep engineers and other sought-after employees from leaving for rivals or buzzy startups, big tech companies are increasingly attractive for hard-to-find tech workers.
- And in case you missed it, RW Johnson sends a warning to politicians who don’t control their borders (think ANC v ActionSA) in his excellent recent piece: Think carefully about immigration.
