The world is changing fast and to keep up you need local knowledge with global context.
Like so many of the German manufacturers, Mercedes is jumping on the loads-of-derivatives bandwagon like a fat kid on a cupcake. The latest to be launched is the GLE Coupe. Apparently having a practical soft-roader, then made sporty, then made less practical makes complete sense to the bigwigs in Stuttgart.
In fact it’s such a good idea Mercedes had to publish a War and Peace sized press release explaining just what a good idea it is. Never one to blindly believe a manufacturer’s claims, we’ll instead have a browse through the highlights of what we can expect and for the moment ponder the ‘interesting’ styling.
From the pictures you’ll note this soft-roader was actually taken off road – shock and horror. But at least its seems semi-capable of what it says on the tin. – Nick Hodgson
Mercedes-Benz is combining two classes of vehicle – each with its own distinct style – to make a new model, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé. The sporty nature of a coupé dominates, imbued with the striking characteristics of a robust SUV.
The GLE Coupé is introduced with a diesel model – GLE 350 d – with an output of 190 kW of power and a petrol model – GLE 450 AMG – delivering 270 kW of power.
The top-of-the-range model GLE 450 AMG, is the first model of a new Mercedes-AMG product line – the AMG sports models. In addition to the standard equipment – the dynamic handling control system, the Sports Direct-Steer system and the driver assistance systems – the GLE Coupé comes with a nine-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive.
“Our GLE Coupé combines typical coupé attributes, such as sportiness, dynamism and agility, with the confident presence, versatility and robustness of an SUV”, says Florian Seidler, Co-CEO Mercedes-Benz South Africa & Executive Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars.
The GLE Coupé is the new addition to the portfolio of Mercedes-Benz coupés, coming in alongside the classic, two-door C, E and S-Class models and the four-door CLS and CLA-Class coupés.
“For Mercedes-Benz, the GLE Coupé is a leader for a versatile vehicle class. It will enable us to win new customers for our brand”, adds Seidler.
