đź”’ A high-impact approach to youth unemployment

By Felicity Duncan

If I had a million rand lying around to give to charity, I think I would give it to Harambee. This “Youth Employment Accelerator” actually takes on the problem of youth unemployment in South Africa in a meaningful way.

Millions of young South Africans are unemployed, and many of them may never find a job. Some of them are stuck in townships, too far from potential workplaces. Others don’t know how to create a CV or handle a job interview. Some of them don’t have an email address.

Harambee addresses all of these issues. It teaches young people how to apply for jobs, gives them an interview-appropriate outfit if they need it, and even offer them skills training for particular jobs if they show an aptitude. Harambee partners with companies to deliver well-prepared applicants who successfully land jobs. It’s practical and it works.

As Ramaphosa looks around for ways to boost youth employment, he could do worse than to take some pages from Harambee’s book.
