πŸ”’ Storms rage around the globe, killing dozens

By Felicity Duncan

This storm season is already scary – a hurricane is flooding the east coast of the US, killing over a dozen people, while a typhoon is ravaging south-east Asia, having killed dozens in the Philippines before heading toward southern China. There’s even a tropical storm headed for the UK and Ireland.

As it becomes increasingly clear that we can expect to see more and more-severe storms, droughts, and wildfires, it is also becoming evident that cities and countries need to start investing in preparedness. The death toll from hurricanes in America has fallen over the years even as storm intensity has risen, thanks to enhanced building codes, careful monitoring of storm conditions, use of evacuation orders, and a well-prepared emergency response system. As storms and droughts start to affect more and more places, similar measures must be adopted around the world.
