🔒 Alec Hogg: Drawing inspiration from those around us

Apologies for Friday’s newsletter. The final edition of the missive, which I re-sent last night after requests from community members, got replaced by an earlier draft. I’m blaming it on the mountain air: we spent much of last week at Champagne Sports, my favourite getaway in the Drakensberg. The pic above is the view from our room…..enough said?

When back home and reflecting on the break, it dawned how inspiration is all around us. Covid-19 has thrown the hospitality sector the biggest challenge imaginable. Yet Champagne Sport’s didn’t miss a beat, its occupancies only slightly down on last year. A reminder that investing during good times always pays off in bad.

Most inspirational part of the holiday, though, came during our visit to a family friend recently diagnosed with a terminal disease. Instead of spending her final weeks moping, she’s done exactly the opposite – she immediately compiled a list and been flat out on it, ensuring there’s no loose ends when she leaves us.

Our species is at its best when engaged in selfless service. Whether it’s health workers who turn up despite the obvious risks; hospitality staff who smile even though they have no idea if their jobs will survive another lockdown; or a family friend determined to exit without drama or disruption to others. Inspiration is all around us. Sometimes we just need to look.
