๐Ÿ”’ Alec Hogg: Dunning-Kruger Effect

I was reminded yesterday of the reason why there is so much dumb commentary around the Covid pandemic. There can be little doubt that many who express themselves publicly – via social and even traditional media – are afflicted by the Dunning-Kruger Effect (see above). This syndrome occurs when a person’s ignorance in a certain area causes them to over-estimate their competence and skill in that field. And then, as grandma said, empty vessels make the most noise. So for the sake of your sanity, best ignore them and work, instead, on seeking out those who have something valuable to contribute. Here’s a measure worth applying: think of Socrates, who urged us to start from the basis that wisdom begins when you admit “I know nothing.” Inverted, be deeply suspicious of those who “know”.
