Let them think you a fool rather than remove all doubt

By Alec Hogg

Some things are best understood with the benefit of hindsight. While it is happening, many who should know better express opinions that later embarrass. American novelist and all-round seer Mark Twain offered the best advice: “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”
What got me thinking along these lines was last night’s peak-hour trip to OR Tambo Airport on the Gautrain. The stations were packed and while not quite the London Tube experience, trains were so well used that half the commuters had to stand. To call Gautrain a success is an understatement. Yet eight years ago when Trevor Manuel, Mbhazimba Shilowa and others argued for their vision, they faced an army of critics.
Such is the human condition that those who argued so vociferously against the project have been silenced by facts. But at least we should remember those visionaries who remained committed despite all the noise. Perhaps even learn that it’s best next time to consider Mark Twain’s advice. Shouldn’t we?
