Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has fired another salvo at South African miners, this time by proposing a restriction on granting and renewing mining rights in the country.
Zwane issued the request in a government gazette published yesterday in which he calls for the promotion of “sustainable development of the nation’s national resources”.
The move comes after the industry took Zwane to court and effectively forced him to halt a controversial new mining charter that seeks to dramatically up black ownership.
It looks as if Zwane is now threatening miners with their right to operate in the country, a bold move that could see him crash and burn faster than expected.
