It emerged today that Minister Mosebenzi Zwane has withdrawn his plan to implement a moratorium on new mining licences amid legal action from the Chamber of Mines.
This comes after the two parties had reached a formal agreement, which has been made a court order. Meanwhile, the Chamber’s application for an urgent interdict is postponed, for now.
However, Judge Monama slammed Zwane for displaying “the utmost disrespect” to the Constitution and rule of law by failing to formally communicate his position in an affidavit. Zwane now has 14 days to explain his flagrant disregard. Ideally, he should be fired as well.
