The drought ripple: Western Cape’s falling hotel room prices

When monthly inflation figures are released, the biggest talking point is usually what impact the number may have on interest rates going forward.

Cape Town drought cracked earthBut when looking at May’s numbers, which contain average prices for hotel rooms, a stark picture is painted in the Western Cape.

Day Zero and the drought have seen the average cost of a hotel room fall 11 percent year-on-year – this against a national average increase of 0.6%.

Just as one small pebble can create a thousand ripples: so too can the impact of the drought.
