Current demand for US green cards is unprecedented, according to LCR Capital Partners, a private equity investment and specialist finance firm, which facilitates access to the U.S. EB-5 Investor Visa Program.

The EB-5 program is a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services approved program and has been running since the 1990s. In exchange for an investment of $500 000, typically over a five year timeframe, it allows investors and their immediate families to obtain U.S. green cards and permanent residency in America.

“Many high net worth individuals in South Africa are considering this option as their ‘back up plan’ should things start to go wrong,” says Marc Sharpe, Partner and Managing Director at LCR.

The increased interest this year is due to two major factors. The first is the deteriorating economic situation in SA since the credit ratings downgrade in April.

The other factor is the U.S. Congress, which is expected to increase the investment amount from $500 000 to over $1million sometime between now and September 30th, 2017.

This increased investment amount makes it harder for many South African investors, in terms of the capital amount required, but also in terms of abiding with exchange control regulations. South African investors are therefore choosing to act now, before the required investment amount changes.
