Statistics South Africa released its figures for the second quarter of 2022 last week, recording an official unemployment rate of 33,9%.
SA’s quarter two GDP figures, which came out better than expected – beating estimates, despite economic activity still below pre-Covid levels.

This week, Stats SA is expected to report that South Africa’s unemployment rate has jumped to just under 35% – or one in every three.
6.734 million were unemployed, which is another record high (up 78,000 relative to Q2 2019, and up 524,000 year-on-year), which equates to an official unemployment rate of 29.1%, up from 29.0% in Q2 2019.
After shrinking sharply in first quarter of the 2019, the economy rebounded from a low base to record positive growth of 3.1%Â in the second quarter.

The economy grew an annualized 3.1 percent in the fourth quarter from the previous three months compared with a revised 2.3 percent expansion in the prior quarter.
A new report released by Stats SA on mortality and causes of death in South Africa, indicates that 55.5 % of deaths can be attributed to non-communicable diseases, also known as lifestyle diseases.
