Nkandla Style: Top of the BizNews pops – Daily Newsletter

Hi there,

So the first quarter of 2014 is history. For South Africa, it’s been a watershed period. On the economic front, the Rand is showing how the nation keeps living beyond its means and as part of the rebalancing, the interest rate cycle has turned. But there’s been far more attention on the socio-political side where we have a President who couldn’t give a stuff what fellow citizens think of his pillaging of the public purse; the same thing can be said for AMCU’s leadership about its members and Sanral’s executives about Gauteng road users. Sadly, society’s Drift to mediocrity continues apace. Have we reached rock bottom? All sane South Africans, led by our indomitable Archbishop Desmond Tutu, pray we have. But only after the May 7 votes will we know for sure.

Given current developments, it’s not surprising that yesterday’s best accessed story on Biznews was the Nkandla Style Youtube video which has now had 300 000 views and 500 comments. You’ve got to wonder what it will take for Jacob Zuma to absorb that he has overstayed his welcome. First the boo-ing at the Mandela Memorial. Then the damning report by the Public Protector. And now this.

There must be an extremely heavy Good News Filter around the unpopular President. Reminiscent of his predecessor Thabo Mbeki who, right up until the moment the ANC turfed him out, was being told by advisors that his grip on power was secure. Mbeki was apparently in a state of shock for several days after his Polokwane humiliation. Hopefully Zuma’s intelligence is better, the filter weaker, and he leaves while he has some dignity intact.

Best

Alec
