Don’t panic – it’s vote catching season, after all – Daily Newsletter

Hi there,

A friend has come back after four months in the US. Having taken advantage of the American Green Card fast-track for investors, he and a couple of close South African friends have invested in a business in California. He’s been there to help give the company a kick start. He is like hundreds of my other highly skilled, wealthy countrymen who are concerned at the direction our nation is going. And although born and bred here – and mindful of the differences in the US and SA cultures – he is considering his options.

It’s not easy to make a case for our country right now. With Nkandla, the Developmental State, eTolls, an 11 week strike that’s paralysing the nation’s biggest export earner, and the promise by a Government that it will force farmers to give away half their holdings, he’s right to question whether the lunatics are starting to run the asylum. My calming response (I hope) was to urge him to wait until after the May 7 Election. Remembering how Trevor Manuel warned me last month that crazy things are said in vote catching season.

South Africa negotiated 1994. That time we required Divine Intervention to avoid a disaster, to avoid becoming the tragedy that is Syria today. We got it 20 years ago. Is it too much to ask that it happens again?

Best

Alec
