Hi there,
Man’s brief sojourn in this mortal coil was very much on my mind this weekend. Saturday’s Scouts SA board meeting was the first since the passing of Garnet de la Hunt, for so long the local movement’s driving force. It was so terribly sad not to be sitting next to this inspirational, honourable, fun-loving man with the sparkling eyes. And even sadder to reflect after the meeting that life goes on, that business continues.
Death is a reminder that none of us have the slightest clue when we’ll be called away. While I was in the US, another inspirational friend, Alan Knott-Craig, decided to listen to his body and step away from running CellC. Having had some deep conversations with him in 2008 after a third heart attack forced his retirement from Vodacom, Alan’s return to the fray came as a surprise. Since coming back, he has changed SA’s cell phone market forever. It was something he said he just had to do. It cost him dearly, but happily not the ultimate price. There’s a lesson in that somewhere.
Best,
