Hi there,
All who knew were saddened by Wednesday’s passing of BCX chief executive Benjamin Mophatlane. A bootstrapper who worked his way through university selling computers at Incredible Connection, the amiable Ben fulfilled his dream last month when securing a takeover by Telkom of his R2.5bn group. Passionate about his community, his country and his continent, this self-confessed geek was anticipating the most exciting years of his life. Suddenly, at just 41 years and one month, he has gone.
Ben’s passing is a reminder of what really matters. The growing pains of a young democracy is so absorbing that it can easily disguise that reality. We often become obsessed by the headlines. But when you cut to the core, the greatest asset we’ll ever possess is peace of mind. Which means being content with our lot, living one day at a time, knowing that no matter how distressing today might seem, this too shall pass. Because, as Ben’s passing reminds us, none of us have the faintest idea when we will return from whence we came. And as the old saying goes: If you worry you die; if you don’t worry you still die. So why worry?
Best,
Alec
