Note to self: Read the Constitution. Again.

A young man emailed last week vigorously objecting to my criticism of a Cabinet Minister, something which he believes I have no right to do. Not by a long chalk is it the first critical note my work has evoked. Nor will it be the last. But it triggered thoughts about how different this country might be if we could simply adopt the cornerstones of our hard won Constitution. You know, the one which says we live in a non-racial constitutional democracy, a land where all are equal under the law, black and white.

Given their desire to please those who voted them into power, it’s logical for politicians to push the envelope. The role of the media, the clergy, business and civic society at large is to rein them in. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Constitution is designed to prevent that, to be the final arbiter. Yet few South Africans bother to read the document. That’s like trying to get around a city like Beijing without a GPS. Small wonder we get lost so often.
