We’ve just returned after a few days in Cape Town, long overdue as is any visit to the Mother City. The Cape Winter gets a terribly unfair Press: we had brilliant sunshine all five days. Also on the upside, eateries frequented by locals are as good as ever, including a wonderful discovery for us, the excellent Melissa’s in Kloof Road. On the downside, genuine tourist traps have become commonplace in popular areas. We found the quality of service and the food uniformly awful at places we tried in the Waterfront, Camps Bay and Constantia Nek. Too much easy picking perhaps?
Something else caught me by surprise. It looks like the trek of professionals from Gauteng to the Cape is gathering momentum again. We bumped into a number of recently relocated friends and acquaintances. A reflection perhaps of the pulling power of the DA’s efficient governance of the Mother City a fact that is starkly evident. Traffic lights work, the roads are clean, the public gardens are well tended and ratepayers seem to get accurate utility bills. And I didn’t see a single temporary wire that hangs like spaghetti across Highveld roads as quick fixes to keep (some) streetlights burning. And the highway to the airport isn’t tolled.
Oh well, at least we still have the Gautrain. And really friendly people.
@alechogg can we exchange the City, let them Cape Townians take Jozi and fix it, we will fetch it later * jozi tears
