Thuli set to drop her own Zupta bomb – Cabinet’s secretary gets subpoena.

Kryptonite comes in various forms. Murderous Chicago gangster Al Capone was brought down for tax evasion. PW Botha’s regime collapsed because of international bankers who were disappointed once too often. David Cameron shot his foot off trying to humiliate the upstart UKIP. And for Jacob Zuma’s ANC, unravelling began when it allowed Nkandla’s R30m security upgrade to become a R250m plunder fest. That greed gave concerned citizens the incentive to present the matter before the Constitutional Court – resulting in Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng’s subsequent flaying of Number One and, more importantly, vesting previously untapped muscle into the office of the Public Protector. Those newly discovered powers are now being applied by outgoing PP Thuli Madonsela in her final case, investigation of the crony capitalist Gupta familyclose friends of the President and employers of various members of the Zuma clan. Cape Town – Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s probe into alleged state capture is “proceeding”, DA leader Mmusi Maimane said on Sunday.

Maimane said in a statement on Sunday that Madonsela had responded to a letter he wrote to her in August requesting progress on the report.

“I can confirm that the investigation is proceeding and that I am receiving full co-operation from most parties involved,” Maimane said she had told him.

He said it was an important announcement from the Public Protector.

“The Public Protector in her response to my letter also stated that she has ‘been provided with various voluminous information and documentation for review’.

“This speaks to how deep President Zuma’s programme of state capture goes and his role in undermining the country’s constitutional democracy,” Maimane said.

Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe said earlier this week that Cabinet would co-operate with what will be Madonsela’s last high-profile report before she leaves office in mid-October.

Radebe said on Thursday that the secretary of Cabinet, Dr Cassius Lubisi, had been subpoenaed.

The subpoena requested the Lubisi provide declarations of Cabinet members and the minutes of Cabinet meetings for the period between November 2015 and April 2016 that recorded the appointment of acting ministers while the incumbent ministers were abroad. – News24
