How to pay R53 a MB for bandwidth – ignore the fine print

Digital storage has become incredibly cheap. Which is probably why we don’t pay as much attention to it as we might.

After getting yet another reminder that my storage in the cloud was running out, I was about to click on “upgrade” until a thought popped into my head to have a look at exactly what was in there. A few minutes later, masses of duplicate photos and videos had been deleted and acres of space freed up. One of the better recent investments this weekend.

It was a reminder of how this kind of thing can get out of hand. Three years ago, after checking the small print I discovered an agreement where we were paying a ridiculous R53 per MB of bandwidth at a time when another supplier was charging 1c per MB.

It came from an old contract that dated back to 2005 when bandwidth in South Africa was scarce and expensive. Every year since, the service provider had been simply escalating the charge – even though the market price for bandwidth was plummeting. Worth having a look at those digital commitments?
