Among the JSE-listed stocks in the portfolio is MediClinic, acquired on the basis of its substantial Swiss and Middle Eastern operations. Chatting to a good friend this week, it’s apparent MediClinic is sitting on a goldmine that will be available once SA’s politics normalises.
My pal, who lives in Ireland, is recovering from a “whole” knee replacement conducted last week in Stellenbosch. On hearing my surprise he explained that SA’s medical specialists are at least the equal of those in the northern hemisphere, but at a quarter of what he was quoted in Dublin.
Once SA’s crime is under control and the skies opened to introduce low cost air travel, a potentially massive medical tourism industry will be unlocked. Roll on 2019.
