Tapping into a couple of SA icons with Biznews and the BBC

By Alec Hogg

Judging by the downloads of my latest podcast, thousands more South Africans are now aware of the nation’s unsung war hero Sailor Malan. The boy from Wellington who became the Royal Air Force’s greatest WW2 fighter pilot, had been written out of SA history books. Have a listen by clicking here (as ever, the transcript is available on Biznews Premium).

Sailor Malan’s sad but inspiring story is told by chartered accountant-turned-storyteller Michael Charton, who follows in the footsteps of the late, great David Rattray next week by holding his first public presentations in London. Advance bookings show that just like Rattray, he will be warmly welcomed by the history-loving Brits.

On the subject of history, I was thrilled to hear one of my all-time favourite people featured by one of my favourite podcasts. BBC’s brilliant Witness podcast this week looks back 34 years to when the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Archbishop Desmond Tutu. You can access that podcast by clicking here. Well worth the investment of your time.
